Preparing Your Dog for Cooler Weather and Fall Adventures

The crisp fall air is refreshing for dogs, but it’s essential to prepare them for the shift in weather. Short-haired and smaller dogs, in particular, may need extra protection as temperatures drop. Consider adding a lightweight, water-resistant jacket for your dog, especially on brisk mornings or rainy days. This added layer helps them stay comfortable and makes outdoor walks enjoyable for both of you. Let’s Go Canine can recommend some of the best apparel options to keep your dog warm without restricting movement.

As the days grow shorter, lighting becomes another important consideration for fall walks. Visibility decreases earlier in the day, so equipping your dog with reflective gear or an LED collar improves safety for evening strolls. A reflective harness or leash keeps both of you visible to passing cars and other pedestrians, helping prevent accidents.

Fall is also a time when allergens, like leaf mold, start to accumulate. These can lead to itchy skin or respiratory irritation in some dogs. Keep an eye on your dog’s scratching or sneezing, and regularly brush their coat to remove allergens they may pick up outdoors. For dogs with sensitive skin, a soothing oatmeal bath can help reduce itching.

If you enjoy hiking or visiting parks with your dog, keep an eye out for seasonal hazards like acorns, mushrooms, and certain berries, which can be toxic if ingested. Fallen leaves, while fun to play in, can sometimes hide sharp objects or pests like ticks. After each outdoor adventure, give your dog a quick check to ensure they’re free of ticks or debris that might have gotten caught in their fur. At Let’s Go Canine, we’re happy to share more tips on keeping your dog safe during fall excursions.

Autumn can also be a good time to revisit your dog’s diet and activity levels. With cooler temperatures, many dogs become more active and may need a slight increase in calories to maintain energy levels. Speak with your vet to determine if your dog’s dietary needs should be adjusted for the season. And don’t forget to keep fresh water available during outdoor activities—hydration is just as important in cooler weather.

Let’s Go Canine is here to support all of your seasonal pet needs. Contact Let’s Go Canine today to learn more about how we can help you and your dog make the most of this fall, ensuring a healthy, happy season for your loyal companion!
